TAMPA — Beleria Floyd had an idea for a ground transportation company that would be unlike any other.“In my research, I was looking at the limo companies in Tampa. There’s a lot of competition. What can we do differently?
Then it hit me – all females,” she said.
Grand Dames Car Service Inc. began in 2007 when Floyd, who previously worked in the event planning industry, traveled to Seattle to visit a friend. The friend hired a driver to meet her at the airport.
“He opened the door, took my bags, and as soon as I sat inside the car I said ‘I’m going to start this kind of business,’” Floyd said.
On the ride to the friend’s house, they discussed what it took to run a ground transportation business. They met for the lunch the following day. Today she calls the driver her “mentor.”
Upon her return, Floyd set about buying the cars. She would need more than one car, her mentor told her.
A family friend who worked at a car dealership lined her up with three sedans for a down payment of $10,000 each. She financed the down payment with credit cards and a home equity line of credit. She parked the cars at her house, where she based the business. Based on customer demand, she’s since replaced one of the sedans with a stretch limo.
